Audi open to electric supercar with solid-state battery

The Audi Sport division is working on an electric super sedan for launch in 2020, tentatively named the e-tron GT.
However, this model isn't a replacement for the R8 supercar which sits at the top of the Audi Sport lineup.
At this point in time a replacement for the R8 is yet to be decided but one possible solution is an electric supercar with solid-state batteries to outclass the Tesla Roadsterand Rimac C_Two.
The information was revealed by Audi Head of Product Communication Peter Oberndorfer in an interview with Motoring published Wednesday.
“We consider everything at the moment but I personally believe we need a little bit more battery development,” Oberndorfer replied when quizzed about an electric supercar.
Better batteries is a problem Audi knows all too well. The automaker came out with an R8 e-tron electric supercar based on the second-generation R8 in 2015, but the car didn't perform any better than a Tesla Model S costing a fraction of its $1.1 million asking price and was axed after less than a year on the market.
Oberndorfer said lithium-ion technology can't provide the range, charge times and low-weight characteristics an Audi electric supercar requires but pointed to solid-state batteries possibly being the solution.
“Our development boss Peter Mertens is speaking of solid-state batteries, which are still a few years away, but I think it would be an advantage if it will be developed, so that batteries are getting lighter and need less space,” he said. “There is some progress with lithium-ion but I think the real progress will come maybe with solid-state or something similar.”
Solid-state batteries promise improved safety, range and charge times for electric cars compared to liquid-type batteries currently in use. This is because they're less prone to overheating or fire, and they’re also much denser, meaning more capacity in a smaller space.
Audi's first volume electric car launches on August 30 in the form of the e-tron SUV. It will be followed shortly by a more coupe-like e-tron Sportback (2019), e-tron GT sedan (2020), compact car (2020), and two small SUVs
 (2021).

Audi goes hypercar

Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren and… Audi? Audi will make the massive jump from premium sedans, wagons and coupes up into a genuine supercar maker within the next three years, if the Bavarian carmaker’s newest board member gets his way. Audi’s Wolfgang Durheimer is deep into an optimistic program to take the hugely successful R18 e-tron Quattro Le Mans champion and turn it into a very exclusive road car along with a hard-core sports car to fight against Porsche’s Cayman. Planned to sit well above Audi’s existing sports car flagship, the R8 V10 Plus, the R18-based hypercar would use a slightly modified version of the Le Mans winner’s diesel-electric hybrid powertrain. “We don’t take as much benefit from the Le Mans Program as we probably could,” Mr Durheimer told Motoring.com.au during the Detroit Motor Show. “We are looking at a product that is directly received from the racing car and adapted for street use.  “We are pushing for diesel-hybrid high performanc...

New facelifted Audi A4 spotted on the road

An updated version of the popular Audi A4 saloon is on the way, with 48v mild hybrid tech likely An updated version of one of Audi’s biggest sellers, the A4 saloon, will arrive before the end of the year, Auto Express can reveal. Despite sales figures for the A4 slipping in the wake of buyers flocking to SUVs, the saloon remains Audi’s biggest seller in Europe; tens of millions of pounds will be pumped into the development of the updated A4 to increase its appeal.  Ahead of the car being revealed, possibly at this year’s Paris Motor Show, spy shots have shown the Mercedes C-Class rival undergoing testing in Germany. It’s clear the A4 won’t benefit from a dramatic exterior redesign; the modest disguise suggests a reshaped front bumper will be the biggest visual change. However, new headlamps and a reprofiled rear bumper are also expected. • Best executive cars on sale The light disguise could indicated that Audi is focusing more on t...

Audi previews all-new A5 DTM racer

Ingolstadt manufacturer will use Frankfurt motor show to whip the covers off its all-new challenger for the prestigious DTM touring-car championship BMW recently revealed its all-new V8 tin-top racer  for the German DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) touring-car championship, and now Audi has fired a riposte by releasing the first renderings of its A5 DTM concept, which makes its public debut at September’s Frankfurt motor show. The ultra-brawny coupe replaces the existing A4-based racer, which has bagged four DTM titles since 2004, and although the A5 carries over the 340kW V8 and six-speed sequential gearbox employed by its predecessor, the latest-gen car debuts an armoury of cutting-edge tech in line with new regulations being ushered in for the 2012 DTM championship. Audi says these artist’s impressions “merely suggest the looks” of the new DTM car, which will adopt the cosmetic changes administered to the recently updated A5 and S5, rather than the pre-faceli...
